PV (Photovoltaic) wire differs from regular wire in several ways, specifically designed for use in solar systems:

Using regular wire instead of PV wire in solar systems may cause the insulation to deteriorate quickly, short circuits, or be dangerous. Therefore, only PV wire that is specifically designed should be used.

Battery cable must be larger than PV wire for the following main reasons:
  1. Higher current: Battery systems have much higher currents than solar systems, especially during peak discharge. Batteries may discharge hundreds of amperes, while solar systems typically have no more than 15-20A per string
  2. Lower voltage: Batteries usually have low voltage (12V, 24V, 48V), requiring high current to get the same power, according to the formula P = V x I
  3. Energy loss: Energy loss in wire is proportional to the square of current (I²R), making systems with high current require large wire to reduce loss
  4. Heat: High current generates more heat in the wire. Large wire helps dissipate heat better
  5. Continuous use: Battery systems must supply power continuously, especially at night or when there is no sunlight
For example, a 48V 5kW battery system may need to discharge up to 104A (5000W ÷ 48V = 104.17A), requiring wire of at least 35mm² or larger, while a solar system with voltage of 600V will have only 8.33A (5000W ÷ 600V = 8.33A), where 6mm² wire is sufficient.
